Learning Environment

This is the market in Forecariah which is open every day until around 5ish. We head here during our lunch break to buy food, snacks, laundry soap, fabric, tailoring services, etc. We also have a business (mine is a pharmacy) in this area that we visit to study and ask questions.

Our business advising classes are in an opening under some big mango trees. There are no walls, no air conditioning. Some of the distractions include children shouting Fote!, dogs with fairly eaten up ears, hens kicking dirt and leaves to find food for their chicks in tow, a child nearby with an electronic toy (a strange sight in Guinea), motorcycles roaring by, etc. It's different. Not a bad place though because there is shade. Our language class is at a friend of our instructor's house. We just sit in plastic chairs with flip chart paper taped to a wall in front of us.

Kate! I can't believe that you get to advise a pharmacy -- that is so neat! I went to a really good panel on campus sometime last semester about "social entrepreneurship" for healthcare. One of the organizations on the panel was a microfranchise for healthcare clinics in Kenya. Basically, nurses could buy a franchise in which they would receive training to open their own small clinic providing basic health and pharmacy services. Through their clinic business, they could earn more than they would make as nurses for the government. It seemed like a pretty good system -- the nurses were rather dedicated to their businesses and provided high-quality care. Best of all, the clinics were sustainable in that they paid for themselves. Anyway, you will have to let me know what you learn! Hope you are having a good time!

I haven't checked on this since the first time--I wasn't expecting so much updating already!

Glad to hear you're doing well and enjoying the cuisine.

I think it is very unfair that you are telling us all about what is going around in Guinea, but no one is posting comments to tell you what is going on here in the US! So I feel obliged to fill you in:

- A new NYC Tourism Information Center has opened in midtown manhattan, on 7th between 52nd and 53rd.

- A NYC cab driver reunited a newlywed couple with all their wedding gifts that they forgot in the trunk of the cab.

- A 95 year old man in Texas was reunited with his college class ring that he had lost while helping his church install new playground equipment over 25 years ago. Some kids were trying out their new hand held metal detector in the sand in the playground and found it.

- A 72 year old man in Indiana with long shaggy eyebrows raised $1600 for charity from people who paid to take turns trimming his eyebrows.

I guess that about covers what's happened in the US for the past two months. Oh, I also finally got a job, I started last week! Same title as the old gig, for a wholesaler/retailer of brand name watches, in Brooklyn. Fun stuff! I have a lot to learn, but it pales in comparison to all that you must be learning! Hope to hear from you. My email is my ID that I posted under here, at mac.com (what else would it be?)
